Swayambhunath Stupa, an important holy site of Buddhists in Nepal. While you climb up to this Stupa, you will run through a lush green forest populated with hundreds of monkeys and this is how this Stupa got its nickname - The Monkey Temple. This Stupa is popular for its pair of eyes designed on all its four sides signifying the “God’s all-seeing” perspective topped with a dome and a golden triangle-shaped spire. The Nepali numeral “1” between the eyes represents unity among all. It has the largest image of the Sakyamuni Buddha in Nepal placed on a pedestal. This Stupa is topped with a glittering spire made of 13 golden disks. At the base of its eastern stairway, you will find a painted gate having a 12 feet tall Tibetan prayer wheel that requires two people to turn it. It attracts diverse worshippers – Newar nuns, Tibetan monks, Buddhist monks and Hindus. Perhaps, This majestic pilgrimage site is a symbol of faith and harmony for the locals of Nepal, since centuries.
