Stop At: Nasca Lines, Nazca Peru
After pickup in Miraflores and San Isidro, we will go to Paracas, in Peru’s province of Pisco, where you’ll start your air tour over the Nazca Lines. The drive along the coast of Peru takes about four hours each way.
At the airport, board your Cessna airplane and settle into your window seat (every passenger has one!). Then take off and fly over the World Heritage-listed geoglyphs, the most famous in the world. The high, arid plateau of the Nazca Desert reaches across more than 50 miles (80 km); its isolation and dry climate has helped to preserve the lines over time.
The exact origins and significance of these hundreds of figures are unclear, but it’s believed that the designs were created by the Nazca people between 400 and 650 AD. Fly over several of the individual designs, many of which are animals; your pilot will let you know which designs you're about to see. The monkey, for instance, is 300 feet (90 meters) long and has five fingers on one hand but only four on the other, believed to represent the nine months of drought the Nazca people went through each year.
The spider is said to represent fertility and water, as this arachnid usually appeared before it was going to rain. The flamingo, condor and hummingbird represent the winter and summer solstices; their beaks point to the location of the sunrises and sunsets on the solstice days in Nazca.
During the 1.5-hour flight, you'll have plenty of time to view the one-of-a-kind artwork with great photo ops from the air! When your flight ends back at the airport, you'll have free time to get lunch on your own in Paracas (own expense) before being driven back to your original Lima pickup point.

We were picked up at our hotel an hour earlier than the originally scheduled time. Our guide gave us minimal information as we climbed aboard a bus. We then went to several other hotels for others to board. My husband and I were the only English speakers on the bus. Teh guide would talk for several minutes in Spanish, then say to me and my husband, I will meet you after the flight and you will be returned to your hotel. With my limited Spanish, I determined that the others were on an extended tour. They received information about what we passed as we drove the several hours to the airport. I have no idea what we missed on that part of the tour. The flight was paid for in advance, but we still had to pay an airport tax in cash. It wasn't expensive, but it would have been nice to have been forewarned. The flight itself was short. We saw most of the lines, although a few were hard to find and one - the whale - was impossible to see. A few people got sick on the flight, but were very quiet about it. Seeing the lines was wonderful, but there was a lot of traveling involved and a more informative guide could have made a good experience a wonderful one. Photography was tough, because the lines went by so fast. I only ended up with one photograph. Would I do it again? Probably. I'd do it in a heartbeat if a helicopter ride was offered. Hovering would have been so much easier than the roller-coaster ride that the flight was.
Could only spare one day so feel I missed a lot. The lines were not as big as I'd thought they were and so would have liked to spend time in the town and see the water system. Suggest 2 day trip if you have the time.
Great tour, worth the time
