La Capilla de Hombre

La Capilla del Hombre is a must-see attraction in Quito. It combines stunning architecture with paintings, murals, scluptures and open spaces. It was It was declared by UNESCO as a "Priority Project for Culture" and by the National COngress as a "Cultural Heritage of the Ecuadorian State".

La Capilla del Hombre is the emblematic building of the cultural complex of the Guayasamin Foundation (Fundación Guayasamin) which integrates a set of facilities including the workshop house, now a museum but previously the private residence of the artist himself. The archeolological site also consists of 13 pre-Incan tombs, which were discovered on the same day as Guayasamin's death in 1999.

La Capilla del Hombre has become one of the cultural buildings of great significance and identity In Latin America, both for its architecture and the art work displayed inside it. It is a stone of great symbolism placed in the Andean landscape and its metallic cone-hill brighten the landscape with the sunlight of the Andean sky.

The exhibition rooms are "blind boxes" which means, they don’t have windows. This is to allow visitors to concentrate on the architectural and pictorial work without being distracted by outside elements.

Guayasamin Museum:

This is the house where Guayasamín lived the last 20 years of his life and it opened as a museum in 2012. It displays important collections of modern art acquired throughout his life, including pieces of his pre-Columbian and colonial art collection as well as some of his own paintings. Throughout his life, Guayasamín was particularly interested in the art belonging to the aboriginal people of Ecuador. Strokes and figures were an important influence of his work for painting, sculpture and jewellery designs. That is why he collected an enormous wealth of archaeological pieces from the most important cultures of Ecuador such as Valdivia, Chorrera, Tolita, Guangala, and Jama Coaque, among others.

The Guayasamin Foundation permanently exhibits the work donated by Oswaldo Guayasamin as Cultural Heritage of Ecuador which consists of more than 250 works from his early days, pieces of his collection "Huacayñán" and his later collections 'La Edad de la Ira' and 'Mientras vivo siempre te recuerdo (La Ternura)'. It also includes a collection of more than 1,000 drawings by the artist dating since he was 7 years old to drawings he made shortly before his death.
